New Daily Teams Meetings

Class pages will no longer be updated by the class teachers. This is due to our new learning expectations, which include a daily Microsoft Teams meeting, 08:45-09:00, to register home learners and prepare them for the day of learning.

Assessment work

You no longer need to email in evidence of your work on a daily basis - this has been replaced with set pieces of work that will be identified for assessment. Your teachers will tell you which ones these are in the morning Teams meeting and they will be clearly identified on the daily planning.

To send in your assessment piece, you will usually send an email (ideally from your own school account) with a photo or uploaded attachment of the work. Sometimes, assessment may just be to complete a Microsoft Form or to complete a quiz.

Your teachers would love to respond to all of your emails but that is not possible now. If you do not get a response, and you think you should have (i.e. you asked a question that needs a response), please resend the email with, ‘PLEASE RESPOND’ in the email subject line, this will act as a reminder in such busy times.

Teachers will select samples of work from those entered, to build exemplars of work against the set success criteria at differentiated levels (working towards age related expectations, working at expectations and working at greater depth) to reflect a normal classroom. The work selected will remain anonymous and will focus only on the good examples of meeting the success criteria. Pupils (and families) will then be given the opportunity to self-assess their work against the exemplars to judge how well they are doing and pick out some targets to work on in their next assessment piece.

Morning everyone! It was lovely to see some of you on the Teams meeting yesterday. Sorry for all the technical issues (I will get better, I promise).

Mr Quick would like you all to know that the PE department are hosting a Live Exercise class on Wednesday 27th January from 10:55-11:30. You should have been sent the Teams invite for this event - they have created a little video to encourage you to take part. As always keep sending photos of your work or you getting on with your work. Also remember to keep reading and taking quizzes so that you can meet your reading target for the half term. How about sending in a photo of you reading in an interesting place. Keep being amazing!

Good morning all! I am looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the Teams meet this morning at 9:30am (check your email).

Just some guidance for joining the Teams meet this morning:

- When your teacher invites you to a session it will appear in the relevant channel on Teams. Try to make sure that you are in a quiet, shared, comfortable environment, free from distractions for your session. Please avoid being in your bedrooms unless supervised by an adult.

- If you can’t make the “live” session, then try let us know before the session begins.

- Just like in the classroom, we ask you not to talk at the same time as the teacher. So, keep your microphone on mute unless you want to ask a question or say something in which case hold up your hand just like you would in school. When you have got permission to speak, say what you want to say, and then mute your microphone again.

- Keep your camera on (if you can) because we would like to see your lovely faces and create a virtual classroom.

- You must not record or take photos of teachers or students during video conferencing sessions, and you must not share lessons publicly. Remember our online safety rules – no sharing of personal information.

- We must all follow these rules to keep you safe and to make sure things run smoothly. Just like in school, always remember the Chesswood Bright Sparks Code – show courtesy, care and kindness at all times.

It does seem very strange that I haven't seen most of you since December and now we are half way through January. I'm sorry if I don't get back to your emails straight away, it is a little tricky as I am in class teaching but I will do my best to get back to you as soon as I can. Keep on being Brightsparks and doing the best you can for your home learning.

Morning all! I hope you are all doing well. I am looking forward to seeing you on the class Teams meeting tomorrow and finding out what you have been up to. Remember when you are sending work in to include Mr Yelling and myself so we can both see how you are getting on. I will be posting a few pieces of work later on today that have been sent in.

What has been your favourite home learning task so far? It would be great to get some videos in of you reciting the poem for today - Liar. Ziggy did a great job in class reciting most of the poem perfectly.

Monday 18th January 2021

Sorry for the lack of updates - it has been a busy time for us all! It was lovely to speak to so many of the of the class (those in school and at home) on Friday with our first Teams call. The main event will be Wednesday this week - remember to look out for your invite in your emails - at least we know how to use the technology now.

I have heard from Harrison, who has been completing his maths and listening to an audiobook - The Ickabog by JK Rowling. It would be great to get a picture of the maths, Harrison.

Millie is also keen on the reading - requesting more books after finishing her latest Dork Diary. I hope you took the quiz!

I have not heard from anyone else - remember, you should email in your work on a daily basis.

Mrs A is back in tomorrow, so normal (more impressive!) service will resume with the class pages!

Morning again. I hope you are doing well and working through the learning tasks without too many issues. I'm looking forward to reading the biographies that you will be working on. Thank you to Arthur for sending his Michael Rosen Biography in (see the picture below). He has included lots of interesting facts and some of his own opinion. Did you spot my use of parenthesis?

Morning all. It has been a very different start to the term as I haven't had the chance to actually see many of you. I hope you had a good Christmas break and I hope to be able to see you again soon. We are settling into our new routine at school.

Please remember to send in pictures of your work so we can see what you have been getting up to. I am looking forward to reading your Michael Rosen Biographies. I hope you enjoyed the first Chapter of the Class Reader, I know I did and I can't wait to find out what happens next.

Well done to George, Leia, Dillan and Mason who have all reached their Reading target for the half term. For those of you not in school, we will add your star to the Year 5 board and your picture has been moved up the classroom tracker.

Hi all, we are back to lockdown learning for the half term at the very least. Therefore, the class pages are back up and running - please send in photos of yourselves doing your work - at the computer/tablet, doing your daily PE or just one of the other fabulous tasks you will be doing.

Remember to keep up with the IXL and reading homework (and a great chance for those who need to learn their tables to complete TT Rock Stars) and we will try to get the TOP 10s posted each week.

Mrs Bone and Mrs Arkinstall are both teaching and I am busy helping Mr Jolley run the school, so not every picture will be posted on this page - but we still want to hear how you are getting on.

Meet the teacher - September 2020

Due to COVID restrictions, unfortunately, we cannot meet with parents this year. Therefore, we have produced this video to introduce ourselves, give a brief update on how the start of term has gone and tell you how you can support your child or contact us if you have any queries.

A little bit about mrs arkinstall

Hello 5AY! I am very excited to be returning to teaching in Year 5 (I think it is one of the best years). I thought I would just let you know a little bit about me as we will not get to meet until September.

I have two daughters - Izzy (6) and Jazz (3) who keep me very busy at home. We enjoy watching Disney movies, baking and crafting together. Recently we bought our first tent and we are looking forward to some family camping trips. Lately, I have been investigating different ways that my family can reduce the amount of single use plastic that we use. I have learnt about alternative ways that products can be packaged to reduce the amount of waste and I am sharing these ideas with my friends and family. During lock down I started running. This is not something I ever thought I would do but I am now close to running 5km without stopping. I am very proud of this achievement and I hope to reach my target very soon. Just to let you know I don't always have purple hair - usually just in the holidays.

I have been teaching at Chesswood for 12 years so I've seen how the school has grown and changed over the years. Mrs Lucas and I work together to develop the Religious Education curriculum across the school. I really enjoy this role as it is fascinating to learn about some of the main world religions and discover the similarities and differences between them. Science is another of my favourite subjects because I love learning about how and why things work and act in a certain way. I think the Year 5 Science topics are some of the best! What are your favourite subjects and why?
