Christmas Lantern Celebration at Christmas!

We are textile designers: Bean Bag Toy

After measuring and cutting the rectangular pieces of fabric, a template was used to cut out a heart shaped appliqué design. This appliqué was then hand sewn — using a running stitch onto the fabric as seen below. This is used to decorate and personalise things!

After practising multiple sewing machine skills using a piece of fabric, pupils used a running stitch to sew around the reverse side edges of their two pieces of fabric- ensuring a small hole was left to fill it!

After filling the beanbag, children used overstitch to seal the hole up in their beanbag.

Our finished Sensory Beanbags

After completing the beanbag unit, children evaluated their sewing machine skills and thought about any changes they would make if they were to do this unit again...

We are chefs: world cuisine - Stir fry

After looking at the recipe and scaling up the ingredients needed from 1:2, pupils prepared their ingredients by chopping, peeling and grating.

Children then used the hobs in the DT room to boil their noodles and fry their vegetables. Children with a meat recipe cooked mince and egg thoroughly before adding their vegetables and sauces.

Children were delighted with their extremely tasty stir-fry at the end of this cooking unit!

We are chefs: world cuisine - curry

Preparing ingredients by chopping the onion, peeling and grating the ginger and garlic

Frying our vegetable, preparing our curry sauce and boiling our rice

Serving up the cooked rice with curry

Looking very pleased with their tasty curries!

we are Textile designers: Draw-String Bag

To be completed later this academic year!

Year 6

We are structural engineers: Building Bridges

Children study and explore different styles of bridges and how they work; looking at the advantages and disadvantages of each. Children explore forces of tension and compression building their knowledge as engineers.

Arch Bridges - Compression Forces

Da Vinci Bridge - Compression Forces

We learnt about the Clifton Suspension Bridge and made our own fact page.

Whilst exploring bridges, we focused on Isambard Kingdom Brunel - an ACRO Champion

Clifton Suspension Bridge - As part of the Bristol residential, we visit the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

We are chefs: ready, steady, cook!

To be completed later this academic year...

we are mechanical and electrical engineers:          chesswood festival of speed - Goblin Cars!

Building the Go-Kart following plan instructions

Chesswood Festival of Speed in full swing

Sewing Club

We have 17 sewing machines that are used for textile projects in each year group.

Below are photos of Sewing club using them to learn new skills, design and make fantastic products.

In Autumn, Sewing Club made some festive pumpkins by sewing together 8 pieces of carefully cut fabric!

Thank you so much to the Chesswood pupils and staff for taking part in the Pancake Day Competition! Please watch the video below to see the fantastic flips and funny flops... 25HP to all entries, 50HP for runners up and 100HP to the winners/best flips and flops/most creative and best presentation! Phew! There were so many amazing entries, we had to add extra categories so we could award even more winners than originally planned! Well done to all of you, you have some awesome DT skills! Chesswood rocks...

We are really proud of design and technology at Chesswood. Led by Mr Light and Miss Hayles, we seek to inspire children through the DT curriculum, building key knowledge and skills with many memorable activities along the way.

Update 02/02/21 - Well done Olly in 6SJ for your incredible bridge building, it looks like a really strong structure! 50HP from the DT team for all your hard work. Miss Hills & Mr Light

Update 01/02/21 - A huge well done to Buddy in 3ML for making this cams moving toy during home learning. This is seriously impressive! 50HP from the DT team. Thank you for sharing this with us! Miss Hills & Mr Light

Update 15/12/20 - A huge thank you to the Chesswood parent and Head Chef at '49 Tasty Thai Cuisine' restaurant in Worthing for helping us create such a fantastic Stir-Fry cooking unit in Design Technology for our Year 6 pupils this half term. Children in year 6 watched a video demonstration of the chef making a stir-fry in his own restaurant, scaled the recipe up and wrote their adapted method with great detail before preparing all of the ingredients and cooking the dish themselves! They used a variety of skills including chopping, grating, peeling, boiling and frying safely. The final product was delicious - check out the photos of some families enjoying it at home. After some requests for the recipe, you can find the original published by the chef's daughter on the school website: Home>Curriculum>DT.
