Liz Dolby - Chair of Governors
On behalf of the Board of Governors, welcome to Chesswood Junior School.
Our Vision for Chesswood is of a school where children are inspired with a love of learning, and our Mission is to see that children achieve the highest standards of academic work and behaviour. These aims underpin everything that Leaders, Staff and Governors do at Chesswood.
The feedback that we get from children and parents tells us that there are high levels of trust and pride in the school. Children feel safe, well looked after and happy at Chesswood. There is a strong sense of community and an inclusive atmosphere in which children from diverse backgrounds are welcomed and valued.
These strengths were acknowledged in our most recent Ofsted inspection in December 2017. The dedication and commitment from staff was highly commended and the outcome is testament to that. This is further compounded through the level of engagement and positive attitudes to learning evident on a daily basis.
What is the role of Governors in this? We have three core tasks: setting the strategic direction of the school, holding the Head teacher to account for the school’s performance and making sure that the school’s money is well spent. Many current Governors have a personal investment in the school as parents of current pupils, but we work on behalf of all of the Chesswood community and in the best interests of the school as a whole.
Parents and Governors have key roles in helping Chesswood Junior School to maintain high standards for all our children both now, an in the future. This goes beyond the basics of making sure children attend school regularly and punctually, and complete their homework on time and with maximum effort. The school provides detailed information about each child’s progress and next steps at parent-teacher consultations and in written reports - parents can make a real difference by absorbing this information, discussing it with their children, and motivating them to improve their performance.
Chesswood is a genuine community school and so, while we focus on children securing excellence, we work equally hard to ensure that our school environment is characterised by empathy and equality. As Governors, we want to do whatever we can to support our excellent teaching team to help children enjoy their learning adventure, have fun along the way and to make sure that our children leave with the confidence to make the very best of future opportunities.
