Reading Content and Sequence

Quality Texts Across the Curriculum

Quality texts from a wide range of well regarded authors that represent 'The best which has been thought or said' have been mapped out across the school and are shared with pupils though text exploration, inspiration and class readers.

One-Page Reading Policy

The one-page policy gives a clear and concise overview of how reading is taught in Chesswood Junior School. It details the lesson timings, structure, delivery and assessment.

Assessment Band Sheets

The Assessment band sheet are split into upper and lower key stage documents. They numerically label the national curriculum statements for easy reference and include the VIPER skills and sentence stems that are used in the class taught guided reading sessions.

Accelerated Reader

At Chesswood, we use the Accelerated Reader Programme to support children's progress in reading. Children take Star Reader Assessments every term to determine their reading level. This is in the form of a ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development) - the level children should be reading at to maximise progress. For example, a ZPD. of 3.4 to 4.1 ; children would be expected to be selecting books to read within that range (All Accelerated Reader books in school have a level code e.g. 3.9), quickly moving towards the upper end of that range and seeking to exceed their level. For each Accelerated Reader book completed, children undertake a quiz to indicate the level of comprehension the child has. All children have a bespoke, equitable reading target to achieve by the end of each half-term. Teachers regularly feedback to children their progress against this target.
