Write an atmospheric description!

This half-term in school, we will be focusing on creating atmosphere in our writing.  We will be writing two atmospheric narratives (stories) - one based on the Nordic myth of Beowulf!

Use the picture below to write an atmospheric paragraph (or two!) that sets the scene and creates atmosphere for the reader. Will your atmosphere be one of excitement or mystery, suspense or hope, gloom or happiness?

Use these to help:

Fronted adverbials; five senses; expanded noun phrases; powerful verbs and adverbs; figurative language (metaphors, similes, personification); power of 3.

100 word challenge!

You can write whatever you like! Tell a story, write a poem, talk about an event... anything - as long as it is 100 words and uses the picture below.

So what are you waiting for...give it a go!

Creative Writing Challenge 1

Story starter!

Being big had its advantages....

Question time!
  • Has the character in the picture always been so big?
  • What has caused him to grow to this size?
  • Where do you think he might be going?
  • How will 'normal sized' people feel when they see him?
  • What's on the other side of the wall he's stepping over?
  • Are all his family this big?

Creative Writing Challenge 2

Picture

Look at the picture of the tiny dragon above.  Use the questions below to help you make notes to plan a story involving the dragon.  How will the story start? Will it end on a cliffhanger - or will there be a happy ending? (You can just plan the story, or if you feel inspired, you might want to write it too!!)

  • Where is it from?
  • Why is it so small?
  • Are there more like him?
  • Where does he live?
  • How will you look after it?
  • Will you keep it a secret or tell someone?
  • What is it called?
  • Is it magic?  What magic can it do?

Creative Writing Challenge 3
The Hobbit - an unexpected Journey

Watch the opening scenes of The Hobbit when Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit, meets Gandalf, the wizard, for the first time. (Scroll down to The Hobbit and make it full screen if you would like to....)

https://www.literacyshed.com/the-myths-and-legends-shed.html

Retell the opening to the story of The Hobbit by:

  • setting the scene and creating atmosphere for the reader (use all 5 senses to help the reader build an image in their head)
  • use speech punctuation and adverbs to describe the characters talking to each other - how do they interact with each other? Show how they are feeling...
  • what is Bilbo thinking when he goes back inside his burrow? This could be the end of Chapter 1!
