Chesswood Junior School

Chesswood Junior School

Meet the Governors

The Chesswood Governing Body consists of one main committee, with a Chair and Vice Chair.  Meetings average at 1 per month.

I held various senior HR leadership roles with John Lewis and Waitrose over a 33-year career. I specialised in HR policy development, employment law, acquisitions and HR shared services/centralised administration services.  I took early retirement in 2016.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my 22 years as a school governor, including five years as Chair of Governors, latterly in a very large maintained secondary school in Berkshire.  I have chaired various committees and been an active curriculum link governor across a range of subjects.  I have always worked hard to add real value and offer my skills and experience to support the school leadership in delivering a long term strategy which ensures the best education possible in a safe and secure learning environment for all pupils, whatever their personal circumstances and backgrounds.

I have been very impressed with the approach and strategy at Chesswood and am excited about the opportunities we have for continuous improvement.

I have also worked with children in a number of other capacities including Brownies (Snowy Owl!), cubs/scouts and youth choirs. My younger son is a primary school teacher.

I believe passionately in an inclusive and accessible education system which enables every child to be the very best they can be and prepares them for a life of learning and discovery.

Liz Dolby

Chair of Governors

Lead Governor, Learning

(Co-Opted)

Current Term of office began:

20th September 2019

I joined the governing Board of Chesswood in October 2018 because I wanted to help to support a school that does so much for the children and families in our local community. I am an academic community psychologist whose research work is focussed on adult and child mental health and well-being. I have helped to develop community interventions to support families of children with mental health difficulties and I am on the British Psychological Society national research committee. As part of my day job, I also currently work with several community support services for children and families in Worthing. In terms of governor responsibilities, I particularly focus on supporting the excellent pastoral work that we have at Chesswood. My son joined Chesswood in 2018.

Carl Walker

Lead Governor Pastoral

(Parent)

Current Term of office began:

8th June 2018

I have been a co-opted Governor since May 2019 and became Vice Chair in September 2020. Having attended school meetings at Chesswood and hearing Andrew Jolley share his passion, strategic vision and direction for Chesswood I wanted to support him and the school whilst at the same time be part of a team making a difference in my local community.

I am a father of 2 children at Chesswood (started in 2018 & 2020). I’m a Senior Project Manager for an international hardware and software manufacturing company and my current expertise is the Implementation of Retail IT within the UK for many of the well-known high street names. I have a very varied and diverse skillset and hope this will be useful in supporting Chesswood.

I’m keen to work with the school and governing body to enthuse children and young people attending the school both now and in the future to immerse themselves in the curriculum and extracurricular activities promoted by Chesswood in parallel with the schools core values, to give a first-rate foundation in education and social skills for all pupils.

Lead Governor Premises

(Co-Opted)

Current Term of office began:

16th May 2019

I recently stopped work after 37 years with Legal & General where I held a variety of roles including in their governance and compliance areas. Whilst I now work part time or on short-term contracts, I will be travelling less and can devote time to help a school achieve its goals and ambitions by joining a governing body.

When the vacancy at Chesswood came up I jumped at the chance to join. In terms of philosophy I believe each child is unique and their education should aid their individual growth and development, whilst instilling a sense of community and respect for others. A school should be proud of how they inspire and nurture that evolution and I look forward to supporting the leadership team achieve this.

I’m told the school loves data and metrics. So do I!

Mike Carpenter

Lead Governor, Leadership

(Co-opted)

Current term of Office began:

16th March 2020

I joined Chesswood as a co-opted Governor through my work at Legal & General as a Project Manager and when the chance came up, I was really excited to be able to join the well established team at Chesswood. The governing body is an integral part of schools and it is a great opportunity to be able to be a part of the team that strives to help and support the school and the community within it.

Through my role in project management over the past 10 years, I have gained the skills and knowledge that I feel will contribute to the schools continuous improvement, as well as being able to make a difference to the children and teaching staff with it.  I see this as a real opportunity to give back to the education system that I was lucky enough to have growing up and now seeing through the eyes of my son who recently started primary school.

Hayley Burton

Governor (Co-opted)

Current Term of Office Began:

14th December 2020

I am very proud to be a co-opted governor at Chesswood; I have been involved at the school for many years while my children attended, helping at events and trips, and at one point running an after-school art club.  I have extensive experience in further and higher education, particularly around academic quality, and I am pleased to be bringing this experience to my role.

Nick Wright

Governor (Co-opted)

Current Term of Office Began:

5th October 2020

I have been a Parent Governor since October 2020. I applied because I wanted to be instrumental in making sure that every child gets an equal opportunity to fulfil their potential. I have a son who joined the school in 2018 who is currently in year 5.

I have a degree in Childhood and Youth Studies, studies for this consisted of modules on equality, participation and inclusion, different experiences of childhood (historically, geographically and culturally), children's literature and health and social care.

On a professional level, I am a Recovery Worker, providing community support in the local area. My visual impairment means that I cannot drive a car or ride a bike so everything I do is on foot. This really makes me feel like a real member of the local area. I am as proud of this as I am to be a part of the Chesswood community.

Donna Edmends

Parent Governor

Current Term of Office Began:

I have been in and around Chesswood Junior School for the past eight years. My son left three years ago and my daughter is now in Year 5. Watching my two grow under the care of the staff, was and is both reassuring and special.

As a former English and Drama ; then a Special Needs teacher for twenty years,I was delighted to become a Governor in September 2020. Supporting the education of all children is something I am passionate about; the chance to become a Governor seemed like an opportunity to give back to Chesswood.

Headteacher (Staff)

Current Term of Office began:

I live in Broadwater and have two children in local schools, Samuel in Year 9 and Amelia in Year 5. I’ve been teaching for about seven years now. I initially worked part-time, so that I could jointly share the care of my (then) two young children, at an infant school in Eastbourne teaching in Year 2.

I moved to Chesswood four years ago as I wanted to become much more actively involved in a school in my own community. At Chesswood I’ve taught primarily in Year 3 but this year I was moved to Year 6, a very different challenge which I’m really enjoying.

I am now the Year 5 leader and have held several subject leadership responsibilities including Music, Design Technology, Computing, Spelling and Science.
