Chesswood Junior School

Chesswood Junior School

Meet the Governors

The Chesswood Governing Body consists of one main committee, with a Chair and Vice Chair.  Meetings average at 1 per month.

I held various senior HR leadership roles with John Lewis and Waitrose over a 33-year career. I specialised in HR policy development, employment law, acquisitions and HR shared services/centralised administration services.  I took early retirement in 2016.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my 22 years as a school governor, including five years as Chair of Governors, latterly in a very large maintained secondary school in Berkshire.  I have chaired various committees and been an active curriculum link governor across a range of subjects.  I have always worked hard to add real value and offer my skills and experience to support the school leadership in delivering a long term strategy which ensures the best education possible in a safe and secure learning environment for all pupils, whatever their personal circumstances and backgrounds.

I have been very impressed with the approach and strategy at Chesswood and am excited about the opportunities we have for continuous improvement.

I have also worked with children in a number of other capacities including Brownies (Snowy Owl!), cubs/scouts and youth choirs. My younger son is a primary school teacher.

I believe passionately in an inclusive and accessible education system which enables every child to be the very best they can be and prepares them for a life of learning and discovery.

Current Term of office began:

I joined the team at Chesswood as Clerk to Governors in June 2020. I have over three years experience as a Clerk and an extensive administrative background working in a variety of environments. I also work as Clerk to Governors for our local primary school, also in West Sussex.

Angie Bell

Clerk to the Governors

Current Term of office began:

26th June 2020

I joined the governing Board of Chesswood in October 2018 because I wanted to help to support a school that does so much for the children and families in our local community. I am an academic community psychologist whose research work is focussed on adult and child mental health and well-being. I have helped to develop community interventions to support families of children with mental health difficulties and I am on the British Psychological Society national research committee. As part of my day job, I also currently work with several community support services for children and families in Worthing. In terms of governor responsibilities, I particularly focus on supporting the excellent pastoral work that we have at Chesswood. I have one child in year 5 and another in year 3.

Carl Walker

Lead Governor Pastoral

(Parent)

Current Term of office began:

8th June 2018

I have been a co-opted Governor since May 2019. Having attended school meetings at Chesswood and hearing Andrew Jolley share his passion, strategic vision and direction for Chesswood I wanted to support him and the school whilst at the same time be part of a team making a difference in my local community.

I am a father of two young children (one currently at Chesswood Year 4 and the other currently at Lyndhurst Junior School). I’m a Senior Project Manager for an international hardware and software manufacturing company and my current expertise is the Implementation of Retail IT within the UK for many of the well-known high street names. I have a very varied and diverse skillset and hope this will be useful in supporting Chesswood.

I’m keen to work with the school and governing body to enthuse children and young people attending the school both now and in the future to immerse themselves in the curriculum and extracurricular activities promoted by Chesswood in parallel with the school’s core values, to give a first-rate foundation in education and social skills for all pupils.

Darren Carroll

Lead Governor Premises

(Co-Opted)

Current Term of office began:

16th May 2019

I first joined the Governing Body as a Parent Governor in December 2016. I have two children at the school and felt I should take more of an active role in ensuring the effectiveness of our great school. I think that parent governors have a special role, and should always try to assess issues and decisions from the point of view of parents/carers and families.

I come from a background of project management in a Global company where I worked with people from all ethnic groups and backgrounds. I believe the skills I developed in this role assist me in ensuring the continuous improvement and development of our school.

Since joining the Board, I have also become Foc Chesswood secretary helping fundraise and organise school events, helped out in the classroom, on school trips and administering Year 6 SATs. The more involved I am, the better I feel I can serve the school and understand the needs of both pupils and staff.

Emma Hopson

Lead Governor, Leadership

(Co-Opted)

Current Term of office began:

3rd March 2020

I recently stopped work after 37 years with Legal & General where I held a variety of roles including in their governance and compliance areas. Whilst I now work part time or on short-term contracts, I will be travelling less and can devote time to help a school achieve its goals and ambitions by joining a governing body.

When the vacancy at Chesswood came up I jumped at the chance to join. In terms of philosophy I believe each child is unique and their education should aid their individual growth and development, whilst instilling a sense of community and respect for others. A school should be proud of how they inspire and nurture that evolution and I look forward to supporting the leadership team achieve this.

I’m told the school loves data and metrics. So do I!

Mike Carpenter

Governor (Co-opted)

Current term of Office began:

16th March 2020

I feel passionate about education.

I am a parent of four children and three of them are currently attending Chesswood.

I have worked in two secondary schools in Worthing and been a secondary school English teacher for 17 years.

I am an active member of Worthing community.

I feel that in my role as governor I can use these experiences to help the school go from strength to strength.

Julia Wilson

Governor (Co-opted)

Current Term of Office began:

24th January 2019

I have worked in primary care adult mental health and wellbeing for five years and previously supported people experiencing domestic abuse and homelessness.

I have a daughter in Year 5 who loves Chesswood. My main interest within the school governor role is with the great pastoral work that the staff do, as I believe this is so important in enabling children to feel secure and able to learn and make the most of their schooling.

Andrew Jolley

Headteacher (Staff)

Current Term of Office began:

17th October 2019

I live in Broadwater and have two children in local schools, Samuel in Year 8 and Amelia in Year 4. I’ve been teaching for about seven years now. I initially worked part-time, so that I could jointly share the care of my (then) two young children, at an infant school in Eastbourne teaching in Year 2.

I moved to Chesswood four years ago as I wanted to become much more actively involved in a school in my own community. At Chesswood I’ve taught primarily in Year 3 but this year I was moved to Year 6, a very different challenge which I’m really enjoying.

I’ve held subject leadership responsibilities for Music, Design Technology, Computing, Spelling and currently Science. I’ve been the staff governor at Chesswood for the last two years.

Governor (Staff)
