Keeping children safe on the road

Keeping children safe on the roads is a key safety aspect for families and the school curriculum. There are regular near misses for children on the way to and from school either as a result of child recklessness or driver recklessness. Our curriculum seeks to reduce the risk of injury for all children on the road by building awareness of dangers; ensuring children take responsibility for their safety and building good habits ready to keep themselves, their friends and others safe.

PUPIL ACTIVITY: Some of these road safety videos are decades old and taught your parents and teachers (and even grandparents!) about road safety. Watch them all - what are the key points they all have in common? Which ones do you think are the most effective and why? Share your ideas with the PSHE team:

First Independent Journeys

This video is appropriate for children aged 7-11. Timon and Pumbaa (from The Lion King) are on their way to the King's ceremony; Timon wants to get there quickly, but Pumbaa teaches Timon about road safety.

ROAD READY? EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

This video is appropriate for children aged 7-11. In this film, CITV presenter, s1m Homewood, encourages children to be 'road ready', including how (not) to use mobile phones when crossing roads and where it is safe to cross when getting off a bus.

GREEN CROSS CODE

The Green Cross Code was a public information film in 1975, which used the actor who plays Darth Vader to teach children to stop, look and listen before they crossed the road. Many of your mums and dads and teachers will remember this well!

GREEN CROSS CODE - CLOSE TO THE EDGE

This video is suitable for children aged 7-11. In this updated version of the Green Cross Code from 1983, the same safety message is portrayed with the help of Grandmaster Flash and a classic '80s hip hop groove.

 

tufty road safety campaign - 1970s

This video is suitable for children aged 7-11, although more appealing for a younger audience. The safety campaign was televised in the 1970s and features Tufty the squirrel and his friends - there was even a Tufty Club, that children could join. Ask Mr Himsworth - he was a member!

BATMAN'S KERB DRILL

This video is suitable for children aged 7-11. Batman teaches children how to safely cross the road. The film was made and televised in 1967 and stars the Batman TV star of that time, Adam West. Another one to share with parents, and grandparents, too!
